Megan Thee Stallion has opened up about feeling “dehumanised” by the attention she drew after bursting into the spotlight.
The 29-year-old rap sensation exploded onto the music scene in 2017 with her debut single at the age of 22 – but says she quickly lost control of the narrative around her life.
The three-time Grammy Award-winner has now made a documentary about her life, titled Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words, which is streaming via Amazon.
Explaining her need to make the special, the Hot Girl Summer singer told The Hollywood Reporter, “I started to watch a lot of people dehumanise me, and a lot of people were trying to take control of my narrative and tell my story, so that’s why I even agreed to do the documentary in the first place.
“So let me just tell my truth and lay it out on the table because y’all don’t respect s**t else but raw and honesty. I was trying to be a cookie-cutter celebrity for y’all but it didn’t work out. I am a real goddamn hot girl coach. So y’all are about to experience Megan Pete for the first time.”
The star – whose real name is Megan Jovon Ruth Pete – has credited her mother Holly Thomas, who was a rap star under the name Holly-Wood, for her success.
She said, “I wouldn’t be the woman I am today without Holly Thomas.
“My mom told me not to tell my own business, but I think this was the perfect opportunity to go ahead and tell my business.”
