Wham! scored a Christmas number one with 'Last Christmas' after 39 years.
The classic tune – written and produced by the late George Michael – finally reached number one in the UK and also made history, setting the record for the longest ever journey to a UK Christmas Number One.
Speaking to Official Charts, Andrew Ridgeley of Wham! said: “'Last Christmas' has finally ascended to the much-loved and sought-after Official Christmas Number One, which has always been the main target.
“George would be beside himself [that] After so many years, [we’ve] finally got Christmas Number One. Yoga [George] said he wrote 'Last Christmas' with the intention of writing a Christmas Number One. Mission accomplished!”
The song was initially held off the top spot by 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' of Band-Aids.
However, 'Last Christmas' faced stiff competition this year from Sam Ryder and The Pogues.
Sam – who rose to fame after representing the UK in the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest – was chasing the festive top spot with 'You're Christmas To Me' but said it would be “great” if the “Fairytale of New York put him in the position after the death of Shane MacGowan in November.
He told the Daily Star's Wired column: “I have love in my heart for the New York Fairytale situation.
“That never got to number one and it would have been a great moment, especially now that Shane MacGowan has left us.
“There's a lot of tragedy wrapped up in this song – two great voices are no longer with us and they were taken too soon. This is me taking a great romantic view.”
Fans campaigned to get the Pogues to the top of the charts after MacGowan's death on 30 November.
