Soul legend Al Green returns to share his cover of REM's 1992 hit, “Everybody Hurts.”
Green definitely makes his rendition of “Everybody Hurts” his own. His signature baritone runs through the two-chord rhythm, moving through the verses at his own pace. Green, now 78, taps into his gospel roots while fueling the song with a lifetime of experience.
“While we were in the studio recording 'Everybody Hurts,' I could really feel the heaviness of the song and wanted to inject a little touch of hope and light into it,” Green says in a statement. “There is always a presence of light that can cut through those dark times.”
REM's Michael Stipe even gave his approval. “Speaking on behalf of the entire band, we couldn't feel more honored, more flattered, more humbled,” he said. “This is an epic moment for us.” stream Al Green’s version of “Everybody Hurts” below.
Green returned last year with a cover of Lou Reed's “Perfect Day,” which served as his first new song in five years since its release. He also returned to live performance this year with an appearance at the Fool in Love festival in Los Angeles.
