Tame Impala's Kevin Parker has invented a new instrument called The Orchid.
The Orchid, first conceived as a tool for Parker's own songwriting over a decade ago, is an advanced chord generator developed by Parker and his “friends”, similar to the “chord mode” you'll find on the bottom left of many keyboards. . What's different, however, is The Orchid's creative potential and ease of use: with just 13 keys, a variety of octaves, several voicing options, dual built-in speakers, a MIDI out port, and a rechargeable battery, the instrument promises to be a portable companion for beginning musicians and exploring producers to improve their songs.
Specifically, The Orchid is powered by three separate synthesizers: a polyphonic virtual analog subtractive synthesizer for classical tones, an FM synthesizer for modulations, and a “vintage reed piano emulation” complete with “mechanical noise samples for added realism.” With these, users can select from various “Performance Modes” including “Strum”, “Slop”, “Arpeggiator”, “Pattern” and “Harp”, and bring to life complex, colorful, textured and seamless chord progressions. no type of prior. Knowledge of music theory.
In a new statement, Parker highlighted the benefits he hopes the instrument will offer. “Orchid helps you express what you're hearing or find the idea you were looking for,” he said. “I often feel like a song has its own destiny. Some kind of cosmic path it takes, one that you often have no control over. When you write a song, an instrument is an interface between what you have in mind and what you hear. “You don’t always know it, but you know it when you hear it.”
Released through Parker's Telepathic Instruments, the first limited edition batch of The Orchid will debut in December and will total just 1,000 models. More details about the initial sale will come in the coming weeks, but a press release revealed that the first owners will have the opportunity to “shape and refine” The Orchid through a Patreon-powered online community called The Garden.
