Courtney Love she knows all about the vicissitudes of dating high-profile partners, from the constant whispers and innuendo tabloids to the line-by-line analysis of lyrics in search of clues to romantic breakups and make-ups.
So it makes sense when asked by The Standard if she feels people are “trying too hard” to decipher her lyrics for clues about past relationships in the same way that Taylor Swift's songs do, Love, 60, defended the “Fortnight” singer while also making a fine creative shot at Taylor's catalog.
“Honestly, I don't understand why people are doing this to Swift — who cares if she's dating high-profile people?” Love said of the favorite parlor game of parsing Swift's sharpest lyrics for clues about whose prowess she's praising or condemning. “Like any woman who writes about relationships – dating and breaking up – it happens all the time!” The love continued.
“All musicians write about broken hearts: Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan (albeit on the side), Bowie…” he added before dropping the Love hurts line. “While I may not love Swift musically, her lyrics when she's angry resonate with me — I find it boring and boring to overanalyze them,” Love said.
Swift's comments came in the same interview in which Love said she had a crush on “Squabble Up” rapper Kendrick Lamar, whom she deemed “the best hip-hop writer ever … his flow is beautiful and his lyrics are thoughtful.” . She also hoped the Compton MC would read her mind and send some questions his way, asking if she ever listened to Leonard Cohen or David Bowie growing up. “Because it sounds like it!” she said. “Also, the Bob Dylan of the political era? Man…seriously, he's a genius.”
Love also spoke to her Standard for her long-awaited second solo album, 2004's follow-up America's Sweethearton which she said she has worked alongside her old friend, ex-REM singer Michael Stipe, as well as Echo & the Bunnymen guitarist Will Sergeant. Love recently released a new song with 070 Shake, a cover of Tim Buckley's “Song to the Siren,” whose sound was inspired by the haunting 1983 release This Mortal Coil. This song also features vocals from former Love's Hole bassist/vocalist Melissa Auf der Maur in their first studio collaboration in 24 years.
