With Staff Picks, our writers and editors highlight some of our favorite new music this month. Check out our picks for the best albums of November 2024 below.
Surprisingly, 2025 is still a month away. But even with the holidays right around the corner, there's plenty of good music this month to keep us sane. November featured a notable surprise drop from Kendrick Lamar, a comeback from The Cure that compares favorably to some of their best work, and an eclectic new album from CoSign this month, Illiterate Light. Plus, new albums from FLO, Father John Misty, Kim Deal and more.
Here are our staff's picks for our favorite albums of November 2024, listed in alphabetical order.
The cure Songs of a lost world
Even though it's been 16 years since the release of their last album, The Cure have managed to preserve the recipe for their gothic secret sauce. Songs of a lost worldtheir grand return to studio albums, it is an exuberant, glacially paced and existentially concerned project that lives up to the sadness promised in its title. As is the case with many fans, Robert Smith and company prove that their chronic melancholy wasn't just a phase, and thank goodness for that. Father John Misty— Mahashmashana
Mahashmashana marks the beginning of a new chapter of existential reflection, as Josh Tillman captures the frenetic energy of a society in decline. Their sixth studio album fuses explosive rock anthems with poignant, sad ballads that articulate their spiritual disillusionment as they continue to exist in an increasingly unstable world. Mahashmashanaa Sanskrit term for “cremation place,” perhaps hinting at a space of destruction and rebirth as the old world burns in preparation for the next. There's no doubt that Tillman's songwriting is more polished than ever, capturing the haunting feeling that if he's not losing his mind, everyone else must be too. — Nicolle Periola
