After a fraught ten-year relationship with Capitol Records, Sky Ferreira now has the freedom to release music as she pleases since retiring from the label in 2023. But according to her, reclaiming the recordings she made while signed to her roster will it's not that easy — despite how someone like Taylor Swift he can make it seem.
In a comprehensive interview with Fashion Posted on Monday (December 2), the 32-year-old alt-pop darling opened up about the struggles to gain ownership of her previous work behind Capitol — including her long-awaited sophomore LP Masochismwhich Ferreira claims the label prevented from releasing for years. The most high-profile case of another artist battling her former label over the rights to their masters is arguably an “Anti-Hero” singer who has spent the last three years re-releasing copies of “Taylor's Version” of the first six her. album with Big Machine under her new label, Republic Records.
But, as Ferreira points out, this process requires resources that not all artists can afford. “People keep telling me I should just re-record the songs and they're like, yeah, Taylor Swift can do that because she's a billionaire,” he told the publication. “But I've basically put all the money I've ever made as an artist back into music. I think most musicians I know generally pay to work.”
“I'm working to try to get some of these songs back, but I'm not getting every one,” Ferreira added. “It's such a complicated process, and I have to figure out how to do it all on my own now.”
The interview comes three days before the release of “Leash,” a track Ferreira wrote and recorded for A24's upcoming film Baby girl. It will mark the star's first release since her beloved 2013 debut album Night Time, My Timewhich preceded years of alleged infighting. as the California native describes it, “Capitol didn't think my sound was commercial enough.”
Ferreira said the label officially dropped her on the 10th anniversary of her first LP, claiming Capitol sent her “an automated message that was forwarded” to her. “To let me know that I've been dropped from the label in such an impersonal way was clearly so personal,” he said. Fashion. “It feels liberating, but honestly I'm still angry about the situation. I was catatonic for a few weeks after that email. Not because they dropped me, but just the way it happened.”
“It seemed like their way of trying to break my spirit one last time,” he added. “It's kind of like when someone gets out of prison and doesn't know what to do with themselves. And it's similar to that way where you still don't have rights to everything you did before.”
Bulletin board reached out to the Capitol for comment.
Looking ahead, Ferreira confirmed that she has plans to independently release a new song soon after “Leash.” She also shed some light on her experience auditioning to play Madonna in the superstar's delayed biopic – which had originally cast Julia Garner for the title before the film was shelved – a process that apparently involved hanging out with Madge at home of the legend.
“I spent two months working on it, between auditions and dance rehearsals,” Ferreira said. “Normally I'm not surprised by stardom, but it was so surreal to be with Madonna in her house. I sat in one of her rooms to read the script, then she took me downstairs to her bedroom and did my makeup and put me in her clothes.”
“I was just sitting there watching her put blush on me, like, 'Is this really f–king happening right now?' he added. “They kept calling me to see her, so she seemed to like me for a while. Even though I didn't end up booking the place, it was truly an incredible experience to spend that time with her.”
