Science fiction fans agree that in 2022 The Matrix: Resurrections left a lot to be desired, but that's not stopping Warner Bros. from moving forward with another installment in the cult classic futuristic cinematic epic.
According DeadlineOscar-nominated screenwriter Drew Goddard has been tapped to write and direct a new Matrix movie, and while there's no word on whether Keanu Reeves (Neo), Carrie Anne-Moss (Trinity) or Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus) will return . Imagine if the studio moved forward with the series without bringing any of these actors back (although Fishburne wasn't a part of Resurrections). Unless Warner Bros. plans to completely reboot the series, Reeves will have to return in some capacity in the upcoming film. At least we hope he does.
Per Deadline:
“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the world of The Matrix, honoring what Lana and Lilly started more than 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his love for the series. and characters,” said Jesse Ehrman, President of Production, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures. “The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is excited to have Drew make this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon that the Wachowskis have spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”
Goddard said: “It's no exaggeration to say that The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly's extraordinary art inspires me on a daily basis and I am so grateful for the opportunity to tell stories in their world.”
Wow! Does it sound like they might actually be moving away from Keanue Reeve's Neo and focusing on brand new characters? While we don't know what direction the new Matrix movie might take, fans of the franchise will be up in arms if the OG characters aren't included in Goddard's vision. Laurence Fishburne is not in The Matrix: Resurrections was one of the biggest reasons fans didn't enjoy the 2022 installment. If everyone involved in this knows what's good for them, they won't make the same mistake again.
