A new album from the late producer Sophie will be released on September 24th. This project marks the first time new music has been released from Sophie since the Scottish producer died following an accidental fall in Greece in January 2021. He was 34.
The new self-titled project will be released via Future Classic and Transgressive and features collaborations with artists such as Kim Petras and BC Kingdom, who feature on the LP's lead single, “Reason Why,” which was released on Monday (June 24). The follow-up to Sophie's critically acclaimed 2018 debut LP, The Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides, Sophia will be Sophie's final album release.
The project was produced by Sophie with, as a press release states, “her most beloved collaborators” and was nearly completed when she died. The release goes on to say that it has been “finalised with love by those closest to her”, including Sophie's brother and frequent collaborator Ben Long.
Talking to you Advertising sign In June 2021, Long said there were “literally hundreds” of unreleased pieces the artist had made before her death.
“The idea that Sophie and I discussed many times was to make an abstract experimental album and then a pop record – that would be pop – and continue that cycle for years,” he said. “I don't want to say 'we're going all out' because sometimes Sophie didn't want to or wasn't done. But it was clear with a lot of the songs, just from the fact that we had worked on them and mixed the album, that I know the direction a lot of things needed to go.”
