Tributes are pouring in from around the world following the death of BBC Radio 1 presenter Annie Nightingale, who died at her London home on January 11 after a short illness.
Nightingale, 83, was hailed as an innovator who consistently championed underground music and undiscovered talents across a multitude of genres. She was BBC Radio 1's first female presenter and held the Guinness World Record for the longest run in that distinction. Since she joined the program in 1970, she has become a household name and was awarded an MBE in 2002 and a CBE in 2020.

BBC music director Lorna Clarke also expressed her condolences: “She was a fierce pioneer of new music and the support of female talent and will be greatly missed by her many fans around the world.”
“Annie has always been a huge inspiration to me, in the sense that she worked her way up to Radio 1, proving that you can have a career in radio simply by staying in your lane and specializing in championing new and exciting artists,” he wrote BBCRadio. 1's Pete Tong, who also released a special episode with a tribute to Nightingale with Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter. “Play what you like.
