A$AP Rocky has released the lead single from his upcoming album Do not be stupid.
Produced by Greg Kurstin, Jordan Patrick, Zach Fogarty, Hitkidd and Rocky himself, “Highjack” shows the Harlem rapper to be one of the most confident rappers out there. With bars like “Don't compare this boy to me (I don't like it)/ I feel like I'm Sosa, Chief Keef (I don't like it)/ Tired of them n—as he sleeps “Me, I don't like lunch naps/ N—as f— and I stole the stream and so did you?” leaves things up to interpretation and we're sure fans will be speculating online as to who exactly he's referring to.
These are not the only lines full of subliminals.
“Before we drop 'Peso' on you – well, you don't like Raf/N – do you want a feature from me? This ain't a life raft” and “These n—as want my woman bad, the people want my next track/ The coppers want my Black a–, f—ed up, but it's like that” shows Rocky recalling the game for his influence.
Rocky recently spoke with Apple Music's Zane Lowe and talked about his new music and fatherhood.
About his new single, Rocky had this to say: “I feel like the real thing is back, man, and it's like, this sh– is for the taking. It's highjack. Not only that, but we're just coming with a whole new aesthetic to everything, especially the German expressionism and all the gloomy ghetto futurism. This is exactly how it sounds and what not. His sounds”.
About tapping Jessica Pratt and Jon Batiste for a pair of unlikely features on “Highjack,” he said: “I just love the alternative. I love the different sounds and everything. [Jessica Pratt] it kind of gave me that Portishead with Stevie Nicks kind of thing. … So I've always struggled with her as an artist, and so I thought it was necessary to get her, Jon Batiste on it and make me feel psyched to bring it home in the outro.”
And about fatherhood influencing his new music, he told Lowe: “I've got more personal vulnerable things to talk about and whatnot, and just, I think the trick is to have that good balance of having fun and saying a story or giving something, saying someone hears and sees something informative about you and what not.”
Do not be stupid is set to be released on August 30th.
