Ab-Soul appeared on DJ Hed and Gina Views' SiriusXM show Effective immediatelyover the weekend to talk about his upcoming album Soul Burger when the subject of J. Cole came up.
Gina Views asked him how the group chat was when J. Cole dropped the Kendrick diss song “7 Minute Drill” and after It may be deleted later mixtape that included the song “Pi” featuring rapper Carson and battle rapper Daylyt. Soulo admitted he was surprised the track was on the mixtape and told a hilarious story about the day he found out.
“First of all, I was a little upset with Cole — not upset, but like… Cole was supposed to be in”Fuck Out My Face [FOMF],'' he revealed. “Cole is the boyfriend, actually. This is what I want to make clear to the whole world. I just needed a 12… I played him the album and he picked [FOMF] and I gave him a hard time about it because I was trying to play the game at that point, and it just wasn't working.”
He went on to say, “But I did that joint — me and Lyt did the joint 'Pi.' I did it for Daylyt. I said, 'Let's go back and forth, it was kind of like a boxing match [session] between me and him, and it's called “Pi” literally because me and Daylit [version] finished at 3:14.”
Adding, “I wake up — I don't know if it's the next morning, but right after — Lyt says 'Bro' and he sends me the song and Cole is over there going crazy. I'm like, “Wait, what the fk?” I'm low-key. I'm like, 'Lit, bro, this is one of the best rappers in the world. You gotta let me know before… I'm in his head like, “Bro, you gotta let me know if you wanna send this shit. It ate us.' Just the first listen, because it reached 48 [bars] away from.' It hadn't been mixed yet and his vocals were louder than ours. I wake up to this, my ears are fresh. I called Cole right away.”
He then mentions that Cole told him that their lyrics inspired him. “Man, you were so crazy, I just got into the spirit. My pen just started moving.” Ab added that he respected where the Carolina rapper was coming from. “Cole really is one emcee emcee. I told him I was trying to play the game. Now it makes sense why he was more attracted to 'Pi' than 'FOMF'. That says a lot about him. All he had to do was roll a 12. He had the upper hand. I gave it all to him.”
Not to be a rapper who enjoys being alone, Soul said he told Cole that they should record a proper track where they go bar to bar.
Many speculated that Ab-Soul took a shot at Cole on his latest song “Twist the 1st 2“When he rapped,”Metasota warned me they want war/ But they're actually losing like their wardrobe for half the week” and released the song after Cole dropped his song “Port Antonio” where he addresses his “Big 3” beef bow. But those assumptions were debunked when TDE Punch president went to X to clear things up, tweeting“I hate to clear up rumours, I usually just let them fester and see how far they go, but ALL the lyrics on Pi were recorded long before Like That,” in response to HipHopDX host Jeremy Hecht tweeting that Soule fell on Cole for not telling him that “Pi” would be included in a play.
