Tony McGuinness's next album was finished and put away years before most of you were born.
The influential producer and Above & Beyond member wasn’t always an international headliner. Before finding success in the trance world with bandmates Jono Grant and Paavo Siljamäki, McGuinness was a rock and roll artist inspired by legendary bands like Steely Dan and The Beach Boys.
He eventually created his first solo rock album, SaltDespite working on nine tracks over six months, after finishing recording the album, he put it away in his archives for nearly 30 years. Now, after two decades of success with Above & Beyond and his label Anjunabeats, McGuinness is finally ready to show the world Salt.
The album's first single, “Biker Babe,” was inspired by a brief romance with an American girl in the 1990s, according to McGuinness. He said the story he wrote saw him and his muse in the world of David Lynch's TV show. Twin PeaksThe combination of bittersweet, romantic lyricism and sun-dappled guitar riffs will remind you of those summer road trips where your parents would pick out what was playing on the radio, long before the age of Spotify.
“That's where the Roadhouse came from and that was the case until the end,” he explained in a press release. “I knew she would have to go back to the States because she didn't have a visa and she had an apartment in the States that she didn't want to lose.”
McGuinness also shared another new single, “Babydoll White,” which may be familiar to fans of his deep house side project Fingerprint. He remixed his unreleased rock single for Anjunadeep in 2020 and now, with the help of Bob Bradley, fans can experience the sounds of the 90s in their original format.
