AC/DC are hitting the road for the first time in eight years. The hard rock band announced a European stage tour Monday morning starting May 17th in Gelsenkirchen, Germany and ending August 17th in Dublin, Ireland.
It's a new AC/DC line-up with drummer Matt Laug, who played with the group during their one-off Power Trip appearance last year, and ex-Jane's Addiction bassist Chris Chaney “carrying the torch” for bassist Cliff Williams.
When AC/DC last toured in 2016, hearing problems forced Brian Johnson to pull out for the final leg of the tour. In a move that polarized their fan base, he was replaced by Axl Rose. Bassist Cliff Williams announced his departure after the last show, leaving Angus Young as the last active member of Back to black lining up. “To be honest, it wasn't easy to complete the tour,” Williams said Rolling rock in 2022. “I had some health issues that I won't bore you with the details. But I had things happen while I was on the road, terrible vertigo. For me, I just thought it was my time.”
But when the band reunited to record in 2020 Power supply, Johnson is back to being a baby thanks to a new hearing aid technology. They made peace with me too Back to blackDrummer of the era Phil Rudd, who left the band in 2015 thanks to some pretty serious legal issues in New Zealand that were eventually resolved. He was asked to rejoin the group for his recording session Power supply.
“I'm talking about all the boys with Phil,” Johnson said Rolling rock in 2022. “We defend Phil to the hilt. What happened up there is not the Phil we know. This was just something else. He looks really great now and does everything great.”
Johnson and Rudd's return was enough to convince Williams to join them for the recording Power supply. “It was like the old band back together,” Williams said Rolling rock. “It wasn't like we were starting from scratch, but as close to the band that's been together for over 40 years as we could get. I didn't want to miss that.”
Williams returned to the stage when the band reappeared to play Power Trip in 2023, but Rudd had been replaced by Mike Campbell and Dirty Knobs drummer Matt Laug for reasons that have yet to be explained. Laug is back for this upcoming tour. And Williams was once again sidelined. Chris Chaney, their new touring bassist, played in Jane's Addiction from 2002 to 2004 and then again from 2011 to 2022. He left Jane's Addiction when founding bassist Eric Avery returned a few years ago.
It's not clear if it's AC/DC Power supply The tour will head to America after the European run. It's also unclear whether Williams and Rudd are out of the band or just standing on the sidelines for this run. But fans have waited a long time to see AC/DC in any form, and this is going to be a huge tour.
