Sometimes life imitates art. Sometimes, Mick Jagger dances to your Mick Jagger dance song.
Adam Levine had this most unusual experience. Last month, video surfaced of the legendary Rolling Stones frontman mocking it in a bar, following Maroon 5's 2011 hit “Moves Like Jagger.”
Jagger, now 80 but showing more moves and juices than most half his age, shared the snap on his Instagram account, captioning it with the comment “Moves like who!”.
In the clip, which you can watch below, the British rock hero is clearly excited, cutting some of his iconic shapes as the band Splash perform a cover of the song.
When Levine was dropped by NBC The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday night (April 10), the conversation randomly shifted to Jagger's video.
“It's really surreal,” he tells the late-night host. “It's just one of those things where you're like, 'Oh my, how is that possible. What happens. It is strange.”
For such a surreal, strange, career highlight, few friends thought to share it with Levine. “My mom and like one of my friends sent me the video.” Yes, he continues, “I was shocked that more people didn't send it to me.”
When the song first took shape all those years ago, the motivation at the heart of the story was a woman. Back then, Levine believes, he was “the only idiot crazy enough to say I have moves like Jagger.” Obviously, it's “a matter of trust. It's an impulsive thing,” says Levine. “He's the man.”
During his guest appearance for the evening, Levine also hinted at new music, which he and Maroon 5 will take an in-house approach to, and discussed the band's Las Vegas residency.
“It's coming,” he says of new projects. “For the first time in about 13 years, I decided to take over the reins from the singing part. He is adamant that “the ideas either come from me or the band. So that we don't have real co-authors. The ideas come straight from the core of Maroon 5,” which, he assures, will make the music “sound like it did in the beginning. I'm so excited about what's happening right now.”
The pop group's seventh and most recent studio album, 2021 Geordieculminated in Number 8 on the Billboard 200.
After a string of 2023 shows, Maroon 5 return to Las Vegas for a new slate of dates at M5LV The Residency in the Dolby Live theater at Park MGM, a 5,200-capacity venue.
Playing to players in Sin City, many of whom likely chose that night to see Maroon 5, rather than the super-fans who saved all their pennies and marked their calendars, was a challenge accepted. “It's a new type of crowd to win over,” he admits. “It was a nice challenge” and, ultimately, the dates “breathed new life into the way we play.”
The singer also stayed for a round of “Wheel of Music Impressions” with Fallon. See below.
