Akon joins Kyle Meredith to talk about the 20th anniversary of his debut album, ProblemThe “Lonely” singer also teases his upcoming LP, so listen to the episode above or Wherever you get your podcasts.
Akon takes us back to his 2004 mindset, where his recent release from prison provided much of the inspiration for the album's songs. He talks about how he shed that persona after becoming so well-known for it, as well as how he was musically looking to Michael Jackson and Bob Marley. He also delves into the story of how he came upon the sped-up Bobby Vinton sample on “Lonely” and how he helped popularize autotune with T-Pain.
Elsewhere, Akon teases his upcoming album, noting that some of the new material comes as a counterpoint to his lack of interest in the messages of the current music scene. “I have to go back, just because the direction that music is going I don’t think is helpful,” he says. “I just think there’s a lot of misinformation and misguidance. I think the direction we’re taking young people with music today is not helpful.”
He also talks about plans for a superfan festival that will build on his recent superfan tour. Listen to Akon talk about all of this above or watch the interview below.
