Kendrick Lamar dropped “6:16 in LA” aimed at Drake once again on Friday (May 3).
Produced by Sounwave and Jack Antonoff, fans quickly realized that the explosive diss track sampled Al Green's “What a Wonderful Thing Love Is.”
The Willie Mitchell-produced song originally landed on Green's I'm still in love with you album, which was released in October 1972 and reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200.
The soul singer took advantage of the spotlight by tweeting out the YouTube link to the sample of his track. “What a wonderful thing love is,” she simply wrote to X on Friday.
Host fans flooded in Al Green's responses urge the “Let's Stay Together” artist to clean up the sample so “6:16 in LA” lands properly on streaming services. It is not yet clear if he cleared the sample for further commercial use.
Kendrick isn't the only rapper to try “What A Wonderful Thing Love Is,” as Kanye West previously used it. “Outside the Game”, which landed at Consequence's Take them to the Cleaner mixtape from 2004.
There's an even deeper Drake connection to “What a Wonderful Thing Love Is.” As pointed out by Complexfind the titles of the original 1972 track Mabon “Teenie” Hodges he plays guitar, who is related to drake.
Kendrick Lamar continues to be well calculated while throwing punches in Drake's direction as he has now dropped a pair of nukes on the 6 God. Three days after his scathing “Euphoria” diss, Kendrick unleashed the “6:16 in LA” track taking a shot at Drake and accusing him of leaking to OVO's camp.
“Did you ever think that OVO worked for me?/ Fake bully, I hate bullies/ You must be a terrible person/ Everyone in your group whispers that you deserve it/ Can't Toosie Slide up from this one, is just going to come back to surface,” he raps.
Following the release of “Push Ups” and the “Taylor Made” freestyle, Drake has now received a two-pack combo courtesy of K. Dot. The ball is now in Drizzy's court with the rap world awaiting his rebuttal at a pivotal moment in the simmering feud.
