In 2022, Kula Shaker presented their most ambitious and thematic album, 1st Congregational Church of Eternal Love and Free Hugs. Following the album's release, the band reunited with its original lineup and welcomed organist Jay Darlington after a two-decade hiatus. This meeting sparked the creation of a new masterpiece, Natural Magic.
Unlike the unifying theme of their previous album, Natural Magic bursts with relentless passion and unwavering energy, with no room for filler. Despite the infectious pop catchiness, this LP boasts an impressive length, with nine of its 13 songs surpassing the three-minute mark, offering listeners a broad and enjoyable experience.
The album begins with the captivating “Gaslighting,” featuring the dual vocals of Crispian Mills and Alonza Bevan. The song cleverly reinvents Gil Scott-Heron's 1971 classic 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised', injecting modern relevance with lyrics like “The revolution will not be broadcast live on all social media platforms. You will not receive notifications, only hypnotizations, revelations and realizations.” Jay Darlington's organ playing adds an infectious layer to the track.
The first single is followed by a cascade of catchy rock and pop hits, including the first single released in over two decades with Darlington, the uplifting “Waves.” The funk-infused title track “Natural Magick” showcases Kula Shaker’s innovative spirit, evolving from “Get Right Get Ready” on their 2016 album. K2.0. The second single, 'Indian Record Player', pays tribute to Bollywood icons RD Burman and Asha Parekh.
Throughout Natural Magic, Kula Shaker cleverly attempts to combine country music with Indian mysticism. The opening effort, “Chura Liya” (which translates to “You Stole My Heart”), sees country elements taking center stage in the second half of the LP. “Whistle And I Will Come” builds on themes from previous albums, introducing elements reminiscent of The Jeevas' sophomore LP, “Cowboys and Indians.”
Two standout tracks, “IDONTWANNAPAYMYTAXES” and “F-Bombs,” harmonize perfectly. The first, a powerful anti-war anthem with a renewed sense of urgency, is complemented by the second, a humorous and energetic follow-up. These songs add a dynamic spark when played consecutively, especially in live performances.
Natural Magic concludes with an emotional and moving finale in “Give Me Tomorrow.” This song fuses Dusty Springfield's early charisma with subtle country influences, leaving listeners with an uplifting message. “Let love be your sunshine.” While it doesn't push the boundaries like its previous effort, Natural Magic It is more than a nostalgic reunion; It is a genuine fusion of unified energy. The result is a non-stop entertainment ride, occasionally sprinkled with insightful social commentary to keep the audience interested.
