Right-wing conspiracy theorist used his platform to spread lies that the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre was a hoax
Alex Jones, the right-wing conspiracy theorist ordered to pay $1.5 billion to the families of Sandy Hook victims, has asked a judge to convert his personal bankruptcy to a Chapter 7 liquidation.
According CNNJones bowed to pressure from the Sandy Hook families, who have yet to receive any of the damages from Jones after he was found liable for defamation in 2022 for repeatedly and falsely claiming that the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School was a hoax.
The move comes just days after Jones she was crying last weekend about the possible liquidation of his assets, including Infowars — the longtime platform he used to spread the dangerous Sandy Hook conspiracy — which may now be in liquidation.
His lawyers told a court on Thursday that there was “no reasonable prospect of a successful reorganisation” of his debts.
Motion to liquidate “means [Jones’] The ownership in Free Speech Systems is going to be sold,” Avi Moshenberg, an attorney representing some of the Sandy Hook families, told CNN, citing Infowars.
According files obtained by Huff Postthe conspiracy theorist made $165 million from the Infowars outlet over three years starting in September 2015 and continued to rake in big profits spreading lies that the Sandy Hook shooting was fake.
In Connecticut Judge Barbara Bellis in 2022 decision, Bellis described how Jones' nearly decade-long “misguided, malicious and heinous” attacks hurt grieving families who had lost young children in the tragedy. As a result, families were bullied and harassed by people who believed his lies. He said: “This depravity and the cruel, persistent behavior of the accused demonstrates the highest degree of responsibility and dignity.”
