It's rare to hear old albums again. But that's exactly what these Rhino High Fidelity vinyl reissues provide. We recently explored the New Wave goodness of The Cars Candy-Oand next is the Grateful Dead's 1970 classic american beauty. A complete genealogical record statement, american beauty has stood the test of time and remains one of the Grateful Dead's most important works.
Unlike that of a band like The Cars, american beauty seems to be the perfect choice for a high-fidelity reissue. And Rhino's offering here does not disappoint. Cut from the original analog master tapes, pressed to 180 gram vinyl and housed in a heavy-duty slip jacket, american beauty first and foremost it sounds spectacular here. The mandolin running from the left speaker in “Friend of the Devil”. The tremulous organ that gives 'Candyman' a psychedelic anchor. The rich pastoral harmonies on 'Attics of My Life'. The cute electric guitar, keyboard and drums of “Truckin”.
Listening (or should I say, re-listening) to this classic, you'll find yourself rooting for a certain instrument in the mix, it'll get away spectacularly with Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Pigpen or Mickey Hart and by Bill Kreutzmann , zeroing in and tuning in like you've never been before.
