American Idol is in his top 24, and with his confident performance in Hawaii, Triston Harper didn't hurt his chances of moving deeper into the competition.
The teenager took Idol at the church on Monday night (April 8), with a performance of Blake Shelton's “God's Country.”
At just 15 years old, Harper has a powerful voice, with lilts and command that could – should – belong to a seasoned professional.
McIntosh, an AL student, called out the Disney Aulani stage and, at various points, judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and guest mentor Jelly Roll got up and danced.
Earlier, Advertising sign spoke to Jelly Roll about the young contestant. “He came in with the spirit of a 75-year-old man who had lived a lifetime of pain. Just wise beyond his years, with that deep Southern drawl,” he said Billboard Fred Bronson. “He has you eating out of the palm of his hand within the first two seconds of talking to him, and the best part is he has no idea he's charming. It is what it is, of course, and then it was really nice to move him so much.”
Hawaii week is one Idol tradition that began in 2018, where the top 24 are presented over two nights at Aulani, a Disney resort and spa on Ko Olina.
Harper played the second of those nights.
The young man melted their hearts Idol audition, when he performed a cover of Jason Isbell's “Cover Me Up,” shared his tough story of surviving homelessness with his mom, and earned the golden ticket.
The top 20 will be revealed this Sunday, April 14 on ABC when, as previously reported, Teddy Swims, Lauren Spencer Smith and Paul Russell take the stage for a special three-hour episode. Voting for the top 20 ends on Tuesday at 6am. ET.
