As Kayla and Bethany discover, the '50s and '60s aesthetic of the “Fri(end)s” video plays off the track's retro beat and melody. Visually, it illustrates the dissonance between bitter loneliness and being absolutely in love. It portrays the experience of being without love as you see everything around you and at the same time reflects what it is like to be so happily in love that you are not bothered by the problems of others.
The song plays with themes of desire, with lyrics such as “You've got me deep in my feelings/When I should be in your bed.” It captures that feeling of wanting to take things to the next level with someone, but not being sure or knowing how.
