Andrea Bocelli's Viña del Mar debut was a big deal, and the Italian tenor was awarded not only the Silver Gaviota but also the Golden on Monday (February 26).
With more than 110 musicians on stage, Bocelli opened the second night of the weeklong event, the 63rd edition of the Viña International Song festival. While it was his first time at Quinta Vergara and his introduction to the “monster” as the festival audience is known, Bocelli was at home proving why he is a timeless artist and one of the most revered tenors of his generation.
Accompanied by the Orquesta Metropolitana de Santiago, Bocelli was accompanied by many artists throughout his nearly two-hour performance, including Larisa Martínez, Caroline Campbell, Pía Toscano and Bocelli's son Matteo Bocelli. “Now is a very special moment for me, because I am calling here on stage a young singer, called Matteo, my son,” said the 65-year-old artist, introducing Matteo to the 15,000 in attendance.
Bocelli won the Silver Gaviota for the first time after a standing ovation from a roaring crowd honored him with his first award of the night. Towards the end of his performance, Bocelli received the Golden Gaviota, the highest honor in Viña del Mar.
Argentinian electropop band Miranda! was responsible for closing the second day of Viña del Mar. The band also won Gold and Silver Gaviotas. Both Bocelli and Miranda's appearances! followed by respective sets from Alejandro Sanz and Manuel Turizo on Sunday (February 25). Maná and Men at Work will perform tonight (February 27). Mora and Anitta on February 29. March 1st is a night dedicated to Chilean artists with Los Bunkers and Young Cister. and for the finale on March 2, Argentinian artists Maria Becerra and Trueno perform.
