Controversial far-right influencer Andrew Tate is back in custody in Romania, this time on a warrant issued by British authorities that could lead to his extradition to the UK, according to The Associated Press.
Tate and his brother Tristan were arrested on Monday night, March 11, and ordered held for 24 hours. A spokesman for the brothers, Mateea Petrescu, said the charges stemmed from allegations of sexual assault between 2012 and 2015, which the Crown Prosecution Service finally dismissed between 2017 and 2019. A judge in Romania will decide today whether to execute the arrest warrants which could initiate an issuance process
Westminster Magistrates' Court in London issued the new arrest warrant. Representatives for the stadium, as well as CPS, did not immediately return calls Rolling rockrequests for comment.
Petrescu said the allegations had left the Tate brothers “disappointed and deeply troubled”, adding: “They vehemently deny all allegations and express deep disappointment that such serious allegations have been resurfaced without substantial new evidence.”
A lawyer for Tate, Eugen Vidineac, was quoted as telling reporters outside the Romanian court: “As far as we know, this investigation was already closed, we don't know if this investigation has been reopened, if there is new evidence submitted by the authorities .”
It appears the warrant may have been issued in part because of a tip from a law firm he represents four women who accused Tate for rape as well as sexual and physical assault (although the company believes the warrant stems from new charges unrelated to its clients). The firm, McCue Jury & Partners, said in a statement that it alerted authorities after “receiving information” that Tate may be trying to flee Romania, where he faces separate rape and human trafficking charges.
The Tate brothers, as well as two Romanian women, were indicted on those charges last summer. they denied the charges. A trial date has not yet been set.
Matthew Jury, partner at McCue Jury & Partners, said news of Tate's arrests was “very welcome” adding, “It was a significant concern for many that Tate would seek to evade justice in Romania and abroad. We are grateful to the British authorities for taking our concerns seriously and issuing an arrest warrant. Tate is accused of serious criminal offenses against a large number of victims and must be held accountable.”
The jury also accused Tate of spreading “a huge amount of misinformation about the criminal charges she faces in the UK” during interviews with the likes of Tucker Carlson and Piers Morgan. “We hope these recent developments will deter them and others from continuing to give Tate such a platform or, at the very least, encourage them to question him properly about the allegations,” the jury continued. “Allowing Tate to spread misinformation about the allegations of criminality he faces, not only in the UK, only helps to support and further spread his toxic influence among vulnerable young men and boys, something we should all seek let's put an end to it.”
