Dubbed the “Voice of New York,” Angie Martinez has been a towering figure in New York hip-hop radio for decades, as she was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2020. She also became New York Times bestselling author when her 2016 memoir made the list. And now she can add director to her accomplished resume: The hip-hop journalist will make her directorial debut with a documentary about the important, but often overlooked, DJ Clark Kent.
In a statement to The Hollywood ReporterAngie had this to say: “DJ Clark Kent is a rare gem whose influence can be seen in almost every era of the Hip-Hop history books. With our 50-year-old culture prone to outside perspectives and agendas, it's important to highlight the heroes who advance the art form with purity and authenticity. It is an honor to help share Clark's many truths with the world.”
Born Rodolfo Franklin, the Pan-American DJ and producer has been instrumental in the careers of Jay-Z, Foxy Brown and Shyne, among others. He has produced tracks for Jay, Biggie and Mariah Carey, notably “The best of Brooklyn“, “The sky is the limit“and”Loverboy (Remix)», respectively. Kent is also a highly respected figure in the sneaker community, working with brands like Nike and Adidas, and owning over 3,000 pairs of sneakers.
“I am honored that Angie Martinez is directing. Her entire career is rooted in telling stories in a beautiful and meaningful way. Angie is a true Hip Hop icon and we are very lucky to have her leading this project,” Kent told the outlet.
The documentary will be called God's Favorite DJ: The Story of DJ Clark Kent and the summary is as follows: “[This doc] tells the story of a man who has spent the past four decades non-stop as an architect, teacher and unsung hero in Hip-Hop. The world-renowned DJ, producer and sneaker lover takes us on a journey through moments when he single-handedly changed history. like when he convinced Shawn Carter to believe in Jay-Z's future or taught Notorious BIG how to play like a star and coached Lil Kim through her first studio session. Directed by award-winning media personality and IRL (In Real Life) Podcast creator Angie Martinez, the documentary illuminates how much Clark's DNA shows up in many corners of today's pop culture — from the stars he writes about. music (Kanye West, Mariah Carey, Rick Ross) in his 2024 sneaker collaboration with Nike that now retails for over $10K.
Produced in association with Green Leaf Productions and Mark Sparks Productions, the documentary will feature friends and peers such as Jay-Z, DJ Khaled, DJ D-Nice and more.
