Australian artist Angie McMahon shares new single 'Untangling' ahead of new EP release Bright sides. Due for release on September 13th via AWAL, the new project is a collection of five tracks written concurrently with her sophomore album Light, Darkness, Light Again, which was released last October.
McMahon explains in a release that “Untangling” was a difficult piece to complete. The song remained unfinished on her phone from the early stages of creation Light, Darkness, Light Again. “It was written for someone who is deeply connected to my life,” McMahon said, “so I never felt like either the song or the unraveling itself was completely finished.”
The deeply personal song features McMahon struggling with the prospect that she hurt someone because she was too “slow to heal.” But dealing with those feelings, McMahon sings over a solid bass line and hard guitar that she “untangles” them from her center and calls the situation “a shared misfortune.”
The song was recorded at longtime collaborator Alex O'Gorman's studio in suburban Melbourne, Australia between stops on her recent Making It Through tour — and is the only song on Bright sides which was completed with her much-loved live band: Lachlan O'Kane (drums/percussion), Jess Ellwood (guitar), Stella Farnan (keyboards/synth) and O'Gorman (bass).
“I was surrounded by trees and my friends and I'm so grateful for their musical powers,” McMahon added.
“Untangling” follows the release of another track from the EP, “Just Like North”. Bright sidesThe tracklist will include the two songs released alongside the originals “Beginner”, “Interstate” and “Take Up Space”.
McMahon just returned to the States for a series of full-band Midwest and East Coast tours, recently making stops in Chicago and Detroit. It arrives after a sold-out show at Glastonbury, several sold-out shows at Melbourne's Forum Theater and the Sydney Opera House, and a show with long-time supporter Fred Again… on stage in front of 15,000 fans in Australia.
