If I'm not mistaken, I believe this is the 15th proper full length LP from Toronto emcee/producer Raz Fresco. Someone I've known since high school be it for some of his features or his own extensive discography including Magneto was right mixtape series, produced by Futurewave Gorgeous polo players album, produced by Nicholas Craven Boulangerie album, the Cake beat tapes or more recently the Gia…À La Carte collab EP with Estee Nack from last summer. But with Cookin' Soulcoming being the production of the recognized Supreme Dump Legend: Soul Cook Saga for God Fahim last month, Bakin' Soul here I found something more than promising to deal with it.
“360°” opens with a lo-fi boom bap instrumental that refuses to let the bad city take your smile, while “The Pure” featuring Dano & Lil Supa takes a funnier approach talking about how all this the front view will leave you laughing at the end. . The drumless “Receipts” continues the loot before Estee Nack and Lord Apex join Raz on “Kodak Moment” bringing back the beats and snares that speak of whenever new music is released as Kodak moments.
Moving forward, “Snakes & Ladders” takes a symphonic approach, confessing that he learned life for the first time after playing the game of the same name, that is until “Keep on Pushing” with The Musalini returning to boom bap bringing out all the money when they spit. Life Lessons' turns introspective in a kick-and-snares sample of mockery, while Tha God Fahim's 'Regrets' teaches young people not to make the same mistakes they did. “Marvelous Fabrics” reminds us that the hood is still starving even after Ukraine's favor, but then Gritfall's “No Cap” closes up shop with a cloudy beat that shouts labels for paid ads that sell reverse lifestyles.
I personally met Raz shortly after starting my freshman year of high school listening to his feature on “Why Bother” from Ace Hashimoto's 5th mixtape All Day DeShay: A.M since it's no secret that I was an Odd Future kid during my teenage years and Bakin' Soul it's definitely one of his best works, mostly because of how organic the chemistry he has with Big Size & Zock Beats is.
