Elon Musk and Rubert Murdoch win a leadership award named after Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Barbra Streisand and the late judge's family are not happy about it.
On Monday, the entertainment icon — who was honored with the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Woman of Leadership Award last year — joined Ginsburg's family in slamming the Dwight D. Opperman Foundation over its recent selection of honorees.
In 2019, Ginsburg helped establish the award with the Opperman Foundation to celebrate “women who exemplify the human qualities of empathy and humility.” The organization later opened the award to men, renaming the trophy the Leadership Award while claiming it aims for gender equality. Four of the five recipients are men this year.
Streisand wrote on Instagram that she was “proud” to receive the award from Justice Sonia Sotomayor last year because of the justices' “commitment to democratic values, especially women's rights,” but shared her displeasure with this year's honorees.
“Therefore, I join the Ginsburg family in condemning the choice of this year's honorees,” Streisand wrote, though she did not name the recipients. “I have had the privilege of meeting Justice Ginsburg on several occasions, and I strongly doubt that she would approve of these honorees.”
“The Justice family wishes to make it clear that they do not support the use of their mother's name to celebrate the legacy of this year's honorees and that the Justice family has no affiliation with and does not support these awards,” RBG's daughter said , Jane Ginsburg in a statement to New York Timesdescribing the choice in this year's honorees as “an insult to our mother's memory”.
Julie Opperman, the foundation's president, told the publication that Ginsburg fought “for everyone” and that they wanted to “honor both women and men who have changed the world doing what they do best.”
Along with Musk and Murdoch, this year's honorees included Sylvester Stallone, Michael Milken and the only female nominee: Martha Stewart.
Shana Knizhnik, its author Notorious RBGsaid she honors Musk and his “anti-feminist and anti-LGBTQ sentiments” and Murdoch, who “used his enormous power to undermine democracy,” dishonors Ginsburg's legacy.
