Love isn't always in the air and hot on the heels of a strong 2023, and Bedroom Tax captures this with their new pop-drenched indie track, 'Hands on the Wheel'.
After a 2023 in which Bedroom Tax went from strength to strength, with three exceptionally triumphant releases, each driven by tastemakers such as Radio X's John Kennedy and the BBC's Abbie McCarthy, the band returns with more powerful bass and hard-hitting rhythms, but welcomes more sincere lyricism. in a love story very on the rocks.
Rapper and lead lyricist Gideon Parirenyatwa narrates 'Hands on the Wheel' and vividly portrays a relationship on the brink caught in a web of lies and deceit. The chorus declares that the protagonist is “not the type to fight,” but that his cuckolded lover is “the type to marry,” while fellow vocalist Josh Collins urges us to “keep our hands on the wheel” to add a quality from pop anthem to rap-based tune.
Sean Guy (songwriter, guitar, live bassist) creates a signature foundation of big bass and beats, combining both to drive the song. While the bassline evokes hip-hop classics like The Game's “Hate It Or Love It,” the guitar work is reminiscent of Nile Rodgers or John Frusciante, with Paul Monham (lead guitar) also layering prominent hooks. Urban, funk and rock influences are on full display, culminating in a unique sound that somehow feels incredibly familiar. The band also experiments, for the first time, with organs and synthesizers, taking them into new territory and giving the track a fresh touch. This, combined with colorful layers of added percussion and VST strings, taps into realms like LCD Soundsystem and Baxter Dury.
Written by the band's main songwriters, Sean Guy and Gideon Parirenyatwa, 'Hands on the Wheel' was recorded and produced by JB Pilon at Hackney Road Studios, receiving the final touch of expert mastering by the incomparable Matt Colton (Arctic Monkeys, Little Simz, Rolling Stones) at Metropolis Studios.
