Scotland's Belle and Sebastian have shared a new song, “What Happened to You, Son?”, originally intended for their final album, 2023. Late developers. It was released via Matador ahead of the band's North American tour, which kicks off next week. Listen to the song below and the tour dates follow.
Frontman Stuart Murdoch said of the song in a press release:
“'What Happened to You, Son' came off the last LP rather by accident because the LP felt like one track was too long. Got out.
“The song is about my youth and the funny hole I fell into in my late teens. I failed my university course, I failed almost everything I tried then. I was obsessed with the music of the era, I used to get so attached to the lyrics and the messages and the feelings of certain 80s era bands – it probably wasn't healthy.
“So although the theme of this song is a bit accusatory, the fault lies with the viewer. I could have blacked out at any moment. Instead, I let the singers become my pedals and deities.
“The song tries to address what happens when pop stars grow up, change, and go down a different path and seem to betray the attitude they held when you loved them the most.
“But I hope the song ends. There is always a way forward, always a light to guide you if you look carefully, if you give up part of yourself, if you let yourself flow and change.”
Belle and Sebastian release new album, Late developers, in January 2023 via Matador. It was the quick follow-up/companion album to 2022 A bit of the previous one album.
In June 2023, the band teamed up with Suki Waterhouse to release a new song, “Every Day's a Lesson in Humility”, for the Sub Pop Singles Club.

A bit of the previous one it was the band's first full-length album in seven years. But in that time they had released an EP (plus an album collecting all the EPs), a soundtrack and a live album. Their last regular album before this was in 2015 Peacetime girls want to dance. In late 2017 and early 2018 Belle and Sebastian released three interconnected EPs through Matador, all titled How to solve your human problems. All three EPs were then compiled into a vinyl set and CD compilation released in 2018. In 2019 they released the indie film soundtrack Days of the Bagnold Summer. In 2020 they released the live album, What to look for in summer.
