internal (TV)
Created by: Daniel Lawrence Taylor
Cast: Josh Tedeku, Jodie Campbell, Myles Kamwendo, Sekou Diaby, Aruna Jalloh
Streaming on: Tubi (free with ads)
You don't need a subscription to watch this interesting British import about a group of low-income black children who get the opportunity to attend a posh British boarding school and have to deal with the resulting culture shock. Fun fact, if you didn't know: “public schools,” in the United Kingdom, are not actually public schools as we know them in the United States; They are the kind of places where dukes and earls literally send their children to receive an education. Beyond the strong exploration of issues of class and race, all the characters are clearly drawn, something essential for a school drama like this.
Detroit diarra (TELEVISION)
Created by: Diarra Kilpatrick
Cast: Diarra Kilpatrick, Morris Chestnut, DomiNque Perry, Claudia Logan, Bryan Terrell Clark, Shannon Wallace, Jon Chaffin, Phylicia Rashad
Streaming on: BET+
I love offbeat mysteries, especially when the lead investigator is as attractive as the titular Diarra (Diarra Kilpatrick). Down on her luck but determined, divorced Diarra refuses to believe that a spectacular Tinder date is cheating on her, and her attempt to find him leads her down an unexpected path. The Detroit setting, plus Kilpatrick's unique voice, make this one feel pretty special: he's almost a bit Soderbergh at points, although he's full of humor.
Extraordinary Season 2 (TV)
Created by: Emma Moran
Cast: Máiréad Tyers, Sofia Oxenham, Bilal Hasna, Luke Rollason
Streaming on: Hulu
If you never watched season 1 of Extraordinary, know that it's a quick binge (eight 30-minute episodes), with season 2 picking up with this story of a world where everyone has some kind of superpower, except hapless twenty-something Jen (Máiréad Tyers). It's something fun, sweet and tremendously imaginative.
