In a new interview, Beyoncé addresses her move away from making music videos for her recent album releases, citing that they are sometimes distracting.
After existence an artist who helped shape the concept of music videos with her previous releases, fans have wondered why Beyoncé hasn't released videos for her last two albums; Renaissance and Cowboy Carter. In a cover interview with GQlaid out her reasons why it's time to move away from having graphics as part of her music projects going forward. “I thought it was important in an age where all we see is visuals, that people can focus on the voice,” the singer shared. “The music is so rich in history and instruments. It takes months to digest, research and understand.”
“The music needed space to breathe on its own,” Beyoncé said continue. “Sometimes a visual can distract from the quality of the voice and music. The years of hard work and detail in an album that lasts over four years! The music is enough. Fans from all over the world became the field of view. We all got perspective on the tour. Then we got more visuals from my film.” The superstar did leave some room for change, revealing that, among other creative pursuits she enjoys, “I also edit for fun.”
Fans clamored for videos from Beyoncé for her last two hit albums, imagining it would be on par with the visuals she delivered for her 2016 album Lemonade and Black is Kingher 2020 collaborative film with Disney and Blitz Bazawule that rethinks lessons from The Lion King for young black girls and boys. The multi-Grammy winner also spoke about her love for other female artists out there now, including Raye, Victoria Monét and Chloe x Halle, as well as expressing her love for classics from Motown legends Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder.
