Matt McBriar, one half of the famous electronic music duo Bicep, has revealed a recent surgical procedure to remove a rare brain tumor.
McBriar shared a statement via the band's Instagram page on Tuesday, writing that he began experiencing headaches and fatigue in late 2023 before undergoing blood tests the following spring. The tests indicated “that something was wrong,” so he opted for an MRI and CT scan, which detected a large tumor.
McBriar says his doctors discovered a craniopharyngioma tumor on his pituitary gland. Although usually benign, a growth of this variety can put pressure on nerves, blood vessels or brain tissue near the pituitary gland, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.
“The good news is that firstly, it's almost certainly not cancerous and secondly, I caught it in the early stages of damage,” McBriar said. “I was very lucky to be able to get those initial blood tests followed by an MRI. If much longer had passed, I could have lost some of my vision and many other problems due to the size and position of the tumor pressing on my optic nerves.”
McBriar continued to perform before ultimately undergoing brain surgery on Aug. 9, 2024. He is currently recovering in the hospital after a successful operation to remove the tumor and anticipates a recovery period of six to eight weeks, he said.
McBriar's bandmate Andy Ferguson will be performing solo Bicep shows “until further notice” while he recovers. route Dates include performances at Creamfields, Making Time, Portola and CRSSD, among other international music festivals. Each of these performances is currently billed as the duo's groundbreaking audiovisual show, “Chroma.”
