“Barbenheimer,” which broke box-office records last summer, also dominated the 2024 Golden Globe Awards, presented at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Sunday (January 7).
Oppenheimer won five Globes, the most of any film since La La Land won seven awards seven years ago. Barbie it won two (fewer than expected) – best original song and in the new film and box office achievements category. In the latter category, he won Taylor Swift: The Eras tourwhich some thought might be an upset winner.
“Why was he made?”, the Barbie The ballad by Billie Eilish and Finneas won best original song, beating two other songs from Barbie, “Dance the Night” and “I'm Just Ken.” It's the sibling pair's second Globe in three years, marking the fastest repeat trip to the podium in this category, after Benj Pasek and Justin Paul won back-to-back awards in the category with “City of Stars” from La La Land (which they composed with Justin Hurwitz) in 2017 and “This Is Me” by The Greatest Showman in 2018.
Eilish is only the fourth woman to win the category twice, following Carole Bayer Sager, Marilyn Bergman and Diane Warren.
“Why was he made?”, which Barbie Director Greta Gerwig has called the song the “heart” of the film and is tipped to win the Oscar for Best Original Song. Oscar nominations will be announced on January 23.
Ludwig Göransson won Best Original Score for Oppenheimer. It is his first Globe win, after nominations in this category Black panther and Doctrine and Best Original Song Writing for “Lift Me Up” by Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Göransson is the first Swedish composer to win best original score. Göransson is tipped to win the Oscar for Best Original Score on March 10.
The top winner on the television side was HBO Successionwith four awards followed by FX's The bear and Netflix Beefwith three prizes each.
Past Lives went 0-5 for the night, the longest shutout of any film. On the TV side, Hulu Only murders in the building had the longest shutout, also going 0-5 on the night.
