The Artist Rights Alliance (ARA) issued I open a letter condemning the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to violate and undermine artists' rights. Signatories, which include more than 200 artists, include Billie Eilish, REM, Kacey Musgraves, Elvis Costello, Nicki Minaj, Jason Isbell, Mac DeMarco, Aimee Mann, Jadakiss, Sheryl Crow, Chappell Roan, Jon Bon Jovi and more. The artist-run nonprofit is asking developers, technology companies, and digital music platforms and services to “commit not to develop or deploy AI music production technology, content or tools that undermine or replace the human artistry of songwriters and artists or to deny us fair compensation for our work.”
The organization highlights the use of musical works by technology developers to train and produce AI models without permission from the artist, and the use of AI-generated “sounds” and “images” that substantially reduce royalties paid to artists. “, as stated in the letter. “For many working musicians, artists and songwriters who are just trying to make ends meet, this would be devastating.”
“This assault on human creativity must stop,” the letter continues. “We need to protect ourselves from the aggressive use of artificial intelligence to steal the voices and likenesses of professional artists, infringe on creators' rights, and destroy the music ecosystem.” Read the entire note here.
