Billy Joel performed at the Grammy Awards for the first time in 22 years, stopping by the ceremony on Sunday night (Feb. 4) to perform “Turn the Lights Back On,” his first new music in nearly two decades.
Joel shared “Turn the Lights Back On” earlier this week. Co-written by Freddy Wexler, Arthur Bacon and Wayne Hector, the song is a piano ballad that conveys Joel's signature style, with some modern touches. For his Grammy performance, Piano Man took center stage with a full backing band, featuring Icelandic jazz-pop revivalist Laufey on cello.
Before “Turn the Lights Back On,” Joel’s most recent release was 2007’s “All My Life.” In 2001, he shared his final studio album, The Classic Collection. Fantasies and delusionstheir most recent pop album being 1993. river of dreams.
Joel has won six Grammy Awards, and Sunday night's performance wasn't the first time he's done it on the Grammy stage. In 1994, after CBS interrupted a Frank Sinatra speech for a commercial break, Joel famous for stopping a rendition of “The River of Dreams” mid-song in protest.
