A new dance The music scene heads to the beaches of Mexico next month, with the inaugural Ahabaja Music festival. Curated by Austin Gavlak (DJ and founder of electronic music festival, Powabunga), Ahabaja kicks off with Black Coffee, Bedouin, LP Giobbi, Stavroz and more, playing what organizers have called a “24-hour experience” from the west until sunrise. The festival runs from March 30th to April 1st in San Jose Del Cabo with tickets on sale now at artwithme.org.
Ahabaja Music festival, billed as a “celebration of music, art and community”, kicks off with a “warm-up night” on March 30, before Belgian quartet Stavroz take to the decks with an outdoor set on March 31. The music will continue into the night at various locations throughout Cabo, before ending with a sunrise at the Hotel El Ganzo beach club.
The festival's name is “a playful tribute to Baja, California,” says Gavlak Rolling rock. “The festival takes place in the incredible – and still slightly off-the-radar – city of San Jose del Campo on the southern tip of Baja, Mexico. And honestly,” he says, “it's fun to say!”
Black Coffee is expected to play on the night of the 31st. Ahabaja's set is billed as the DJ and producer's first public performance since suffering an injury from “serious travel accident» earlier this year. Although details of the incident were scarce, a post on his Instagram account confirmed that he is recovering and receiving “the best medical care.”
Other artists scheduled to perform at the festival include Parallelle, Chambord, Mandrake, David Hohme, Facundo Mohrr, Roderic, Gab Rhome, Tommy Raffa, Gavlak, Julia Sandstorm, Carmel, Illich Mujica, Matt Caines, Dark But Grey, Jose Noventa, Cirque Noir and Golden.
As well as the music line-up, organizers say attendees can take part in everything from yoga sessions to wellness workshops, along with “amazing artwork and performance artists”.
All events are curated by Gavlak and Art With Me, an international arts and culture collective known for art, music, wellness and cultural festivals around the world. Pieces on the ground will also be curated by the family behind ZONAMACO, the largest art exhibition platform in Latin America. Judging by previous events from the organizers, expect sculptural installations, live art demonstrations, full-scale projections and light shows, and plenty of food, drink and dancing.
“Ahabaja is our tribute to a part of the world that we've fallen in love with,” says Gavlak, about launching a festival in Cabo. “Art with Me and I want to bring our communities together on this amazing beach and combine its natural beauty with the sounds of incredible music and the sights of powerful nature art. We want people to carry the energy and vibe of Ahabaja with them long after the last set.”
