Just days after Black Midi announced their indefinite hiatus, vocalist and guitarist Geordie Greep announced a new solo album titled The new soundwhich is set for release on October 4. She also shared the album's first single, “Holy Holy,” and a slate of tour dates for 2025.
Greep wrote many of the songs of The new sound among the black midi shows over the past two years. Over 30 different musicians took part in the sessions The new soundWhich was recorded in both London and São Paulo, Greep says in a statement that much of the album was re-recorded in Brazil “with local musicians assembled at the last minute” and finished in London.

“It was the first time I didn’t have anyone to be accountable to,” Greep says of the new album. “And with every impulse I had, I was able to follow it completely to its conclusion. Being in a (black midi) band, we often have that feeling of ‘we can do everything,’ but you’re also a bit limited in that approach, and sometimes it’s nice to do something else, to let things go.” He describes the main theme of The new sound like “despair; you don’t hear an unreliable narrator but someone who deludes himself into believing that he has everything under control, but he doesn’t.”
To support The new soundGreep has a European tour planned for 2024, taking place in the fall, and a North American tour for 2025, taking place in the winter. The North American leg kicks off with a January 17 show in Philadelphia and continues through the Northeast and Midwest, stopping in cities like Baltimore, Nashville, Chicago, Toronto, and more. Before the new dates, he’ll play a four-show residency in New York City in September. Check out the full list of Geordie Greep tour dates below.
Tickets for Geordie Greep's 2025 North American tour go on sale Friday, August 23 at 10:00am local time via Ticket Master.
“Santo Santo” is the first offering of The new soundAnd it’s every bit as grandiose as Greep’s usual output of black midi music. With heavy Latin big band notes and a whiff of desperation, “Holy Holy” follows a character convincing a woman in a nightclub that he is, indeed, a famous and beloved man, until the music builds to a chaotic climax and the character’s insecurities are laid bare: “And I want you to make me look taller/ Could you kneel down the whole time? How much would that cost?” Greep sings.
The song also arrives thanks to a music video directed by Ethan and Tom. The video shows Greep in a suit at a bowling alley, frequently dancing on the slippery floor and drinking a cocktail through a straw. Finally, we zoom in on bowling, through casino imagery, and end up on a pool table, all done with a psychedelic tinge. Watch the video for “Holy Holy” below.
Greep released three albums with black midi, including the 2023 one Hellfire. Although he himself broke the news during a recent Instagram Live session, the band confirmed via The Quietus that they would be on an “indefinite” hiatus but could reunite in the future: “After a successful tour that included dates in South America, they have agreed to take a break and do some solo work, with the understanding that Black Midi's door [would] can be left open.” Cameron Picton, another member of the trio, has also teased more music from his solo project, Camera Picture.
