Blur drummer Dave Rowntree has taken the next big step in his political career by running for Parliament in the upcoming UK general election.
Having recently spent four years on Norwich County Council, Rowntree will run as the Labor candidate for the Conservative-held Mid Sussex seat in a bid to turn it red for the first time.
“I am delighted to have the opportunity to become the first Labor MP for Mid Sussex,” Rowntree said in a statement. “Residents have the best chance in a generation to make their vote count and return a Labor MP to parliament.”
He continued: “The Conservatives have run out of ideas and the Liberal Democrats have run out of steam. “I am running for parliament to provide the energy and vision the area desperately needs.”
In 2017, Rowntree was elected as a county councilor for the University Ward of Norwich. He decided not to seek re-election in 2021 due to the pandemic.
Last year, Rowntree met again with Consequence Blur cover songs for their comeback album, The Ballad of Darrenand a reunion tour. Several months later, Damon Albarn said that he had finished revisiting the band and was ready to focus on Gorillaz again. That said, Blur is scheduled to appear at Coachella in April.
I am absolutely thrilled to have been selected as the @UKLabour candidate for Mid Sussex!
