The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson suffers from dementia and the 81-year-old musician can no longer care for himself, according to newly filed court documents.
Following the death of Wilson's wife and manager, Melinda Ledbetter, last month, the musician's former representatives, LeeAnn Hard and Jean Sievers, asked a court to appoint them co-conservators.
According to court documents first obtained by The Daily Maildue to “significant neurocognitive disorders (including dementia),” Wilson is unable to adequately meet his personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or housing. Prior to her death, Ledbetter had been Wilson's caregiver and cared for his “needs of daily life.”
As co-guardians, Sievers (Wilson's longtime publicist) and Hard (Wilson's longtime business manager) say their “intent is to ensure that all of Mr. Wilson's daily living needs are met and that receive the best possible care while staying at home.” .”
Wilson's family confirmed plans for the conservatorship in a statement, writing: “Following the passing of Brian's beloved wife Melinda, after careful consideration and consultation between Brian, their seven children, Gloria Ramos and Brian's doctors (and in accordance with the family processes implemented by Brian and Melinda), we are confirming that former Wilson family representatives, LeeAnn Hard and Jean Sievers, will act as co-guardians of Brian's person.
“This decision was made to ensure that there will be no extreme changes to the home and that Brian and the children living in the home will be cared for and remain in the home where they are cared for by Gloria Ramos and the wonderful team at the home. who have been on site for many years helping to care for the family,” the statement continued.
“Brian will be able to enjoy all his family and friends and continue working on current projects, as well as participate in any activity he chooses,” the statement concludes.
A court hearing on Wilson's conservatorship is scheduled for April 26, 2024.
