On Instagram, the pop star said the paps’ treatment of her prompted the move, though she may just be on a birthday vacation
Britney Spears marked her birthday by revealing that the paparazzi’s treatment of her over the years has prompted her to move to Mexico.
In a video shared on Instagram Monday, Dec. 2 (Spears’ birthday), the pop star explained that she was fed up with the way the paps photograph her and “make my face look like I’m wearing, like, a white Jason mask. It doesn’t even look like me.”
She continued: “They’ve always been incredibly cruel to me, the paparazzi, and pictures, and the way they’ve illustrated me to be in some of it. I know I’m not perfect at all, by any means. But some of it is extremely mean and cruel.”
And then, Spears ended the video by stating bluntly: “That’s why I’ve moved to Mexico.” (Per People, though, the move might not exactly be permanent, with a source saying Spears only went to Mexico on a birthday vacation with some friends.)
Spears’ birthday this year also coincided with the official culmination of her divorce from ex-husband Sam Asghari. The couple began proceedings in August 2023 and reached a settlement in May 2024 to end their 14-month marriage. After a required six-month waiting period, Spears was officially declared single earlier this week.
Last year, Spears published her blockbuster memoir The Woman in Me, which went on to sell more than three million copies. Over the summer, the pop star teased a “secret project” with prominent producer Marc Platt. Soon after, Variety reported that Universal Pictures had picked up the rights for a Spears biopic that would be based on The Woman in Me, with Platt and director John Chu attached to develop it.
