On his new album, Image problemsBrittany Davis fully addresses the obstacles faced as a Black, non-binary, and blind musician, as well as the traumatic family experiences that have presented additional obstacles along the way.
“If you don't feel good about yourself or your body, you can have all the awards in the world, but there's no positivity,” Davis says in the show's latest episode. Image problems – which combines R&B, soul and hip-hop – will be released March 1 via Loosegroove Records, owned by Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard, who became a fan of Davis through the Seattle music scene and is a bandmate of Davis in the group Painted Shield.
According to Davis, Gossard heard Davis during a recording session in his studio and immediately connected with his music.
“He actually heard some of the takes and said, 'Oh, wow, there's something in there, it's different,'” Davis recalled. “This is hearing me play and hearing myself sing. He says, 'Okay, this is something that could become something.' Can we get an album? Can we get an EP?' And honestly, at first it was a group of us, but then he was reduced to just working with our mutual friend and me. And Stone was in love with the things I came up with.”
Image problems is available to reserve at this place. Fans can catch Brittany Davis at a pair of record release events in Seattle on March 1 at Rabbit Box and Easy Street Records, as well as performing at the BottleRock festival in Napa, California on May 26.
