Last September, Broadcast announced a new demo collection, Spell Blanket – Collected Demos 2006-2009, on what would have been the late singer Trish Keenan's 55th birthday. Now they've confirmed the album's release date and also announced another compilation, Distant Call – Collected Demos 2000-2006as well as sharing a track from each album, the unreleased demo “Follow the Light” from Spelling blanket and its trial version Tender buttons track “Tears in the Typing Pool”, by Remote call. Listen to both below, followed by the tracklists and covers for each collection.
Spelling blanket is a collection of unreleased demos from Keenan and is due out on May 3rd via Warp. It features demos recorded on 4-track tapes and MiniDiscs, songs intended for the sequel Tender buttons.
Remote call collects Broadcast song demos that ended up in the Haha Sound, Tender buttonsand The future crayon. It also features two songs, “Come Back to Me” and “Please Call to Book”, which Keenan had recorded in response to Broadcast's 2006 “Let's Write a Song” project, in which fans submitted lyrics on postcards to be used in complete songs. .
A press release says so Remote call will be the last release from Broadcast.
Spelling blanket was originally announced via a Facebook post and with a then projected release date of early 2024 (his album cover was also shared at the time).
Keenan died unexpectedly in January 2011 from complications with pneumonia after contracting the H1N1 swine flu virus while on tour in Australia. At the time of her death, Broadcast was a duo with James Cargill, also her romantic partner. In 2017, in honor of Keenan's 49th birthday, Cargill shared the previously unreleased demo, “Tunnel View.” In 2020, in honor of her 52nd birthday, the previously unreleased four-track demo, “Where Are You?”, was shared.
In an exclusive interview with Under the radar In November 2011, Cargill told us he was working on a new Broadcast album featuring vocals and music made before Keenan's death. “Trish left a lot of tapes, four tracks and stuff, and I've gone through them,” Cargill said. “It's hard, and I'm connected to it at the same time. It's great, but I also feel a sense of loss.” The album never appeared and this demo compilation is released instead.
