Burning Man CEO Marian Goodell is asking for donations from event supporters amid a critical “turning point” for the iconic annual gathering in Black Rock City.
Sharing a candid blog post about the Diary of the Burning Man This week, Goodell revealed that the 2024 event in the Nevada desert was short millions of dollars after tickets did not sell as planned.
“This $5.7 million shortfall, combined with a $3 million drop in main ticket and vehicle pass revenue, means our year-end charitable giving goal has essentially doubled to almost $20 million,” Goodell wrote. “This must happen before ticket sales in 2025 and our annual revenue cycle begins in January.”
While citing donations from “major and dedicated donors,” Goodell called on the global Burning Man community to contribute to fundraising efforts by contributing $20 a month. “Your unwavering generosity and continued donations are necessary to help ensure the permanence of Burning Man,” he pleads before acknowledging that an increase in ticket prices next year is an “unsustainable option” for potential attendees.
The nonprofit is reportedly implementing staff and vendor reductions as part of a “restructuring” of its operations to stay afloat during its financial difficulties. Goodell shared a financial table with more data.
