BVNGS is a 32-year-old MC from New York who launched in late 2017 from her debut EP Unavailable followed by 7 Dutches & a sweet tea, Brown Girls & Bubble Coats, Lula & I'm only crying because I'm drunk. She then caught the attention of the most prolific underground artists in recent memory Flee Lord who signed BVNGSY to Lord Mobb Music and released her 6th EP Laquisha in the spring of 2021. Just 4 months later, I had the privilege of meeting her at a Catch 1 show in Los Angeles that Flee headlined and was blown away by her set. BVNGS herself has been looking forward to her upcoming debut full length studio album ever since, releasing 4 singles and after 3 years, the moment has finally arrived.
After “Channel 7's” intro, first song “'91 Varsity” is this psychedelic trap opener that refers to herself as a boss and a shooter, while “Jester” has an unlikely boom-bam quality that lyrically digs into the hardcore bag her. “Stick Up” strips down to the drums completely promising that no one out there wants to go to war with her and after the interlude, “Get Yo Chain” politely mocks those she stole their ice from to come get it for her back.
“Saw” takes the easy route by organically calling out all the pussies in the game, while the title tracks return to the picture, knowing that one's life is a lie whether one is able to survive or not. “Nights Like This” with AC Gudda comes to a close with Mary Mack warning without drums that you'll need security around them, and “God Saves” officially ends the LP keeping the drums out showing a personal side of her.
She quickly became one of my favorite Lord Mobb signings after being introduced to her a few years ago, but from the 6 EPs BVNGS has already established to Flee signing her to his label and the singles we've gotten from her since it all led right now and you'll definitely be hearing more from her here and there. The production comes from boom bap, trap & drumless & the Big Apple which is very similar LaQuisha is further revealed as a menace in the basement.
