Chappell Roan has been open about the ups and downs of fame amid her meteoric rise to household name this year – but luckily, she's got the likes of Lorde in her corner.
To her The Face cover posted on Monday (September 16), the 26-year-old musician opened up about a moment the 27-year-old “Green Light” singer came to her rescue during a recent situation that led Roan to compare the star to a toxic relationship . “I feel like the fame is just abusive,” Roan told the publication. “The atmosphere of it – stalking, online discussion, [people who] won't leave you alone, yell at you in public – it's the vibe of an abusive ex-husband. That's how it feels. I didn't know I would feel so bad.”
While crying in an airport bathroom after a man berated her for refusing to sign posters — just one of several instances of toxic fan behavior Roan has endured in recent months — the Missouri native says she texted Lorde for advice. “He sent me a list of things I had to do [in that situation]Roan continued. “She literally wrote down eight things she wished someone had said to her when she was going through it. And passed through the king's hell. It was a baby!”
Lorde is one of several female musicians who have rallied around Roan this year, in addition to Lady Gaga, Charli XCX, Lizzo, Katy Perry and Phoebe Bridgers, who have individually offered their support since ” Good Luck, Babe!” the singer's star burst this spring. In another recent interview with Rolling StoneRoan also noted that she and fellow 2024 survivor Sabrina Carpenter have commiserated about their recent career boom.
“No one understands that it really falls on you,” she said The Face of the “Espresso” singer. “No one understands except other artists… Sabrina [Carpenter] He even texted me, “Hey, I feel crazy. I know you feel crazy.' So they are like girls leaning on each other.”
Through it all, the audience has watched as Roan has grown more confident in speaking out about what makes her uncomfortable. In August, for example, he called out the “predatory behavior” of some cross-border fans in a series of social media posts, and on September 11 he shouted “Save the fk!” to a photographer on the VMAs red carpet before winning Best New Artist during the ceremony.
“They were immediately, immediately supportive,” Roan added of her fellow pop stars. ”It was so amazing because I'm so scared and confused.”
