Chappell Roan made a bold statement at the 2024 MTV VMAs—not just for her medieval-inspired sword-and-carpet outfit, but also for a fierce exchange on the red carpet.
The incident, which was captured on video, shows Roan responding after a photographer yelled at her.
While posing for pictures at the entrance to UBS Arena in Elmond, New York, a photographer impatiently yelled at the rising pop star to “Shut the f–k up,” prompting “Good Luck, Babe!” singer to turn around and give an unfiltered response: “Shut the fk up.”
Waving her finger at the fan, she added: “Not me b—h,” before calmly continuing her red carpet poses as the crowd cheered.
Roan has spoken about her experiences as an artist, especially when it comes to setting boundaries. After the incident he said Entertainment Tonight“For someone who gets very anxious around people yelling at you, the carpet is horrible, and I yelled back. You can't yell at me like that.”
Inside the venue was a more positive experience for the Missouri native, who picked up her first MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist.
“Can you believe it? We're at the VMAs!” he exclaimed as he accepted the award. In an emotional speech, Roan dedicated the win to the LGBTQ+ community and those who have supported her. “I dedicate this to all the drag artists that inspire me… to all the queer kids in the Midwest watching right now, I see you. I understand you, because I am one of you.”
Before accepting her Moon Person, Roan brought the heat to the stage with a fiery rendition of her single “Good Luck, Babe!”
Clad in armor, the singer lit a castle on fire with a flaming crossbow without missing a beat on the track, which reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August.
In addition to this important victory, Roan was also nominated for Push Performance of the Year for 'Red Wine Supernova' and The song of summer for “Good Luck, Babe!”.
