Suffice to say, Wednesday night's (September 11) 2024 MTV VMAs were a lot. The 40th anniversary celebration of the former Music Video Channel's signature awards show shared about two Moonpersons an hour during its 190-minute run time, but you might not have noticed as it was also packed with 16 star-studded performances paying tribute to network past, present and future.
So, of course, now it's time to step back and answer the most important question of all: which shows were your favorites?
Maybe you're a traditionalist who loves the comfort food of MTV's iconic stars of the pre-YouTube era, so the show's opening mix by a wig-wearing Eminem might have been your thing, or maybe hip-hop legend LL Cool's The Tax J's tribute to Def Jam and his own four-decade career? If that's your vibe, a shirtless Lenny Kravitz might end up at the top of your list, and surely Katy Perry's dance visual extravaganza celebrating her greatest hits before the Video Vanguard Awards is in the mix.
Among the other sets to choose from are BLACKPINK member LISA's song through her solo songs 'New Woman' and 'Rockstar' and a trio of impressive performances from Latin icons Karol G, Rauw Alejandro and Anitta, who brought killer choreography and some Broadway. dazzled in the process. Speaking of razzle-dazzle, Benson Boone rocked a sparkly jumpsuit while jumping off his piano for a backflipping set that drew gasps.
Camilla Cabello smashed her laptop and got some ex-revenge during an intense “Godspeed,” while ex-flame Shawn Mendes did a super moody slow burn with his new song “Nobody Knows.” Host Megan Thee Stallion proved she's a true double threat with a high-energy medley, and if you weren't bringing back Chappell Roan's Gaga-like medieval masterpiece, you're repeating “Good Luck, Babe!” or Sabrina Carpenter's out-of-this-world medley of recent hits, you might want to check out the tape for a recap of all the shows.
