Tetris Kelly:
Is Chappell Roan the next big pop sensation? The singer-songwriter has soared to pop stardom in the past year, but Chappell has been working toward this moment since she was a teenager. So who is Chappell Roan? What is her story? And how did it get on the charts? This is Billboard Explains Chappell Roan's Rise To Pop Stardom. Born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, she adopted the name Chappell Roan in honor of her late grandfather Dennis Chappell and his favorite song “The Strawberry Roan” by Marty Robbins. Originally from Willard, Missouri, Chappell began uploading covers to YouTube as a teenager. At 16 she wrote her original song 'Die Young' and signed to Atlantic Records at 17. Her first EP was released School nights in 2017 and then released 'Pink Pony Club' in 2020. Unfortunately, her label didn't think she was a profitable artist and she dropped out. Fast forward to October 2023, where Chappell made her Billboard chart debut jumping on the emerging artist chart at No. 8. She later went on to be No. 1 for three weeks on the same chart beginning in May 2024. Chappell's gradual rise to the big time also played out for her debut studio album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. While it was released in September 2023, it didn't enter the Billboard 200 until it debuted at No. 127 in April 2024 after her iconic performance at Coachella and opening for Olivia Rodrigo on her Guts tour.
