It was a A full 16 months since Charley Crockett released a record. It's just a fraction of a typical album release cycle for most artists, but not for Crockett: The Texas singer-songwriter released a whopping nine records over the five-year span between 2018 and 2022.
The marathon wait is just one reason for this $10 cowboy, Crockett's upcoming album is the most anticipated collection of the 39-year-old's career. In a statement, Crockett explained that the record is a wandering tribute to his homeland.
“This stuff is written in truck stops, it's written in the casinos, it's written in the alleys behind the venues, it's written on my truck that was parked on South Congress in Austin,” he said. “A man like me, a genuine transient, is in a very good position to have something to say about America.”
America is a long-standing subject for Crockett, who said Rolling rock in 2021 that the USA was also the subject of his song “Music City, USA”
Written with Billy Horton, Crockett's title track on “$10 Cowboy” is the kind of gritty portrait of the working class that has come to define Crockett's writing in recent years. Crockett and his band will debut the song Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday night.
“Being out on the street gives you a first-hand experience of how different kinds of Americans see themselves going through some kind of great struggle,” Crockett said in an accompanying statement. “The hard work in the oil and gas fields of West Texas. The single mother raising the children alone. The young man who works on a street corner because he thinks it's his only option. I'd be dishonest if I said I can't see the thread. Each of them feels invisible. I'm struck by the battles they're fighting internally and the ways they've become trapped by what America says it is.”
$10 cowboy will be released on April 26. Crockett will support the album with a tour that includes a lengthy run in Australia in February and festivals across North America.
